A health and care system fit for the future

The North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care System (ICS) is a partnership of organisations including local councils, voluntary and community services that provide health and care across our region.

Led by the NHS Integrated Care Board (ICB) we are working collectively, joining up resources and expertise to provide the best health and care for our local communities.

An Integrated Care Partnership (ICP) is a committee of the ICB and the 14 local authorities from across the North East and North Cumbria.

Friday 8 March marks International Women's Day, and here at North East and North Cumbria ICB, we want to celebrate this year's theme of inspiring inclusion.

When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. 

Here to Help this spring

Your NHS is here to help when you need us this spring, but there’s lots you can do to stay well and help us too - whether that’s choosing the right NHS service for your needs, keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet or getting your vaccines.

Who we are

The ICB is responsible for ensuring that high quality and safe health services are accessible to all our communities. It has a wide range of functions including; promoting integration of health and care services, improving people's health and wellbeing, and reducing health inequalities.

With a £6.6 billion budget and a workforce of 170,000 people across health and care we look after 3.1 million people across the North East and North Cumbria. As well as strategic functions, ICB staff also work at place level with local health and wellbeing boards in each of our 14 local authority areas. These teams also work alongside our 67 primary care networks which are groups of local GP practices, social care teams and other community-based area providers.

The ICB works with our Provider Collaborative too, this includes the 11 NHS foundation trusts in the region to deliver our shared priorities.

Our region

We have a strong and proud history of working together across health and care in our region. The quality of our health and care services is consistently rated amongst the best in the NHS and we have an abundance of great care delivered by highly committed teams of health and care staff. Despite this overall public health is still amongst the worst in the country. Our ambition is to change this by working together as an Integrated Care System.

Our priorities

We care for over 3.1 million people across the North East and North Cumbria and are focused on delivering improvements across our services, as well as tackling inequalities and improving the overall health and wellbeing of our communities.

We will help people to stay healthy by addressing the causes of ill health and preventing avoidable diseases so that our population will live healthier, happier and longer lives.

By collectively working together with our local authorities and many other partners including the voluntary sector we will significantly improve health outcomes for people who live in our region.

Integrated care partnership

The Integrated Care Partnership (ICP) is a committee of the ICB and our thirteen local authorities from across the North East and North Cumbria.

Its responsible for setting our priorities and has developed an integrated care strategy to improve the health and wellbeing of people living and working in our region.

The ICP is made up of our four partnerships based around our main population centres.

These local ICPs will develop a strategic picture of health and care needs working with a wide range of partners and local communities.

Provider collaborative

We are a region that thrives on collaborations - driven by a shared ambition to do the very best for our patients, local communities and those who work for us. Our providers (ambulance, hospital/community and mental health trusts) have come together to share their expertise and improve access to services across the region.

When we come together as a community, we’re stronger. That’s why we’re excited to tell you about Boost, our new learning and improvement community. Bringing together a wealth of useful resources, it gives health and social care colleagues a place to share ideas, celebrate successes, and make a positive impact on the lives of patients and each other.
