Medical Director for Primary Care of NHS Cumbria, Mike Bewick has been appointed the new Medical Director for North of England.

Dr Bewick has a longstanding interest in primary care performance and assessment and has been a member of NHS Cumbria’s board since 2007.

He is a past Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) assessment committee.

During his time in Cumbria, Dr Bewick has developed clinical leadership locally in Cumbria and has worked in a team of lead clinicians and managers to develop GP based commissioning.

Dr Bewick started his medical career in hospital medicine, later changing to Primary Care and becoming a partner in West Cumbria until 2007 when he left to become a full time medical director.

He has led the RCGPs’ assessment process as Chair of the examinations board and vice chair of the Postgraduate Training board.

His other interest are around primary care development and system reconfiguration, and has recently been involved in developing an accreditation process for GP practices as providers, pre-empting the expected CQC requirements in 2013.

Mike is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of General Practitioners and Physicians.

In his new role as Regional Medical Director, Dr Bewick will play a key role in providing clinical leadership and advice, in collaboration with the Regional Chief Nurse within the NHS Commissioning Board (NHSCB) Regional Team, to support the delivery of the Board’s objectives.

He will also provide leadership for improving and safeguarding quality.

Dr Bewick said: "I feel privileged to be appointed to the new NHS Commissioning board . I hope to work with a new team across the North of England to improve the quality of care patients receive and to enhance their experience while receiving that care .

"I have enjoyed my time in Cumbria my county of birth and education, working in practice and in medical management. Be it at more of a distance I will always look out for the people of Cumbria's health and wellbeing."

Dr Bewick will take on his new role as part of the NHS transition which ends in April 2013, in the meantime Dr Bewick will also continue to work as Medical Director for NHS Cumbria.
