Antibiotics only effective when you need them

Posted on Friday 15th November 2013

On Monday 18 November health organisations throughout Europe will be raising awareness about the misuse of antibiotics.  Now in its fifth vear and supported by the Department of Health, European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) aims to inform members of the public about the overuse of antibiotics.

NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is supporting this important day in the health calendar as antibiotic resistance is a major public health issue and poses a significant threat to the future of healthcare in the UK.  Using antibiotics unnecessarily creates resistance making them less effective.

Infections caused by antibiotic resistance bacteria can be difficult to treat; they last for a long time and can spread to other people.

Dr Hugh Reeve, Clinical Chair of Cumbria CCG, said: “Antibiotics can save lives but only if used wisely. Anyone prescribed antibiotics should make sure they complete the course for them to be effective.  European Antibiotic Awareness Day highlights how overuse creates resistance.  The best way to preserve their strength is not to misuse antibiotics, as it could make them less effective when you do need them.”

Bacteria are very common in the human body and many of them are helpful.  Less than 1% of bacteria will actually make people sick and when they do they are called bacterial infections.

Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections and will not help with viral infections such as colds, most coughs and sore throats.  The best course of action with these types of illnesses can be through self -management by purchasing medicines coupled with advice from a pharmacist, who are highly trained health professionals providing over the counter treatment for a range of common health complaints without the need for an appointment.
