Health professionals lead the way to prevent infection

Today, (Tuesday 15 October), over 200 million people in over 100 countries around the world including the UK will be taking part in Global Handwashing Day. The theme for 2013 is ‘The Power is in Your Hands!’, as everyone has the power to create healthier communities through handwashing.  

A new team of health professionals are already working to improve infection prevention in Cumbria. The NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the main commissioners of health services in the county, have appointed Paula Smith as Professional Lead for Infection Prevention

Working with NHS England, NHS Cumbria CCG are leading the development of the infection prevention team, which aims to reduce the incidents of health care acquired infection (HCAI) within Cumbria’s health and social care economy .

NHS Cumbria CCG Lead Nurse (Quality & Safety), Laura Carr, said: “Plans are in place to set up an infection prevention team with NHS England’s Area Team. We are also working in partnership with Public Health England and part of our work is the investigation into the root cause of HCAIs within Cumbria.”

Paula Smith joins the department of Quality and Safety for the CCG on a six month secondment, before the permanent position is formally advertised. She will be working with all health and social care providers services within Cumbria to providing assurance that they are registered and complying within The Health and Social Care Act 2008: Code of Practice on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance and can demonstrate compliance with Care Quality Commission criteria.

Paula’s role will also involve liaising with GPs and the established infection prevention teams at CPFT, UHMB and NCUH to reduce the incidents of health care acquired infection within Cumbria.
