Workshops for dementia carers and doctors' practices in West Cumbria

Workshops for dementia carers and doctors' practices in West Cumbria.

Health professionals are hosting two events for people working in GP practices looking at dementia services in West Cumbria, while the Alzheimer’s Society host events across the county for people caring for someone with the degenerative condition.

Clinical staff will take part in an interactive workshop to support GP practice teams develop their own dementia care plans while non-medical teams will be learning what it is like to live with dementia and how they can help patients on a daily basis at work and in the community.

Organised by the Allerdale and Copeland Locality Teams from NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the main commissioner of health services in the county, the sessions coincide with a programme of carer information and support being run by the Alzheimer’s Society.

NHS Cumbria CCG Lead GP for Copeland, Dr David Roger’s said: “Improving care to respond to the challenges of an ageing population is one of NHS Cumbria CCG’s key priorities, and these workshops for GP practices in West Cumbria is part of that effort to develop and improve services.”

Also the Alzheimer's Society are launching a new series of workshops in Cumbria for carers of people living with dementia

The Carer Information and Support Programme is a series of programmes for people caring for those with dementia.

Steven Owen from the Alzheimer's Soceity said: "The group sessions are friendly and confidential. They provide the opportunity for discussion about the experience of caring and provides information about dementia, legal and money matters, ways of coping day to day and getting help from local services.

"The free short courses are for up to 12 people who support a family member or friend who are living with dementia and take place over five consecutive weeks with a different subject matter each week."

Alzheimer’s Society sessions are being run at: 

The Library, Workington on November 4, 11, 18, 25 and December 2 .

Cumbria Archive Centre, Carlisle on January 20, 27, February 3, 10 and 24

Whitehaven Sports centre, Whitehaven on February 7, 14, 21, 28 and March 7

Penrith Rugby Club on January 24, 31, February 7, 14, and 21

Stricklandgate House, Kendal on March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31

Robin House, Barrow-in-Furness on March 7, 14, 21, 28 and April.

• How you can support and care for someone with dementia

• The support services that are available
