Putting people in control of their care

Posted on Wednesday 10th September 2014

Health professionals and members of the public are invited to attend a conference that looks at empowering people who use services. The People in Control conference will be held in Penrith next month.

The event, which will be held over two days, though it is not essential to attend both days, will lay out the foundations for joint care and self-management.

The conference will be an interactive discussion rather than traditional conference style. The aim is to identify what people who use health services and clinicians who deliver them, see is the way forward to empowerment self-management and shared care

Cumbrian GP, Dr Muhammad Farhan Amin who has developed an online community, Patient Memoirs, to help patients help each other understand their health conditions will be a leader of the event which is part of the CLIC events - Cumbria Learning and Improvement Collaborative.

Patient Memoirs is a website which invites people living with long term conditions to video and share their health stories to support and motivate others going through the same experience - and a resource where doctors, specialist nurses and therapists can refer people to view the site.

The aim of the project is to encourage people to educate each other that will empower them in leading a healthy and happy life.

Dr Amin said: “It is our belief that every patient has a unique life story which can inspire us all. This website allows patients around the world to share their life stories with their fellow patients via videos.

“Evidence indicates that empowering patients to discuss their conditions, problems and solutions with their peers has positive effects on their quality of life. It is our belief that this approach also has therapeutic benefits.

“Our long term goal is to create a meeting point where patients, healthcare professionals and care givers can come together to share their life stories, helpful tips and new insights to inspire each other to solve health related problems big and small. Join us and be a part of our community.

“All the videos are monitored before going live and we have guidelines to help people make their recordings.

“I hope my colleagues and their patients across Cumbria find this a useful resource.”

Places are limited to 100 for the People in Control conference at North Lakes Hotel, Penrith on October 6 and 7, 2014. Patients or medical staff wishing to attend the event should visit the CLIC website to secure their place at http://www.theclic.org.uk/education-and-learning/events
