Posted on Thursday 3rd December 2015

Four Cumbrian Primary Care teams have celebrated being finalists at the national General Practice Awards.

Teams from Workington, Windermere and Kendal along with the countywide Cumbria Medical Services were recognised for their innovative work.

Workington Better Together, which developed 7 day GP services in Workington with the support of the Prime Minister’s Challenge Fund, was nominated.

Dr Niall McGreevy, who is also NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group’s lead GP for Allerdale said: “It was great to see so many Cumbrians making it to the finals and to celebrate some of the exciting and collaborative work that is happening across primary care here in our county.”

Dr Fayyaz Chaudhri and Dr Martin White represented Cumbria Medical Services which provides NHS specialist services in community dermatology and some minor surgery. They run clinics from nine locations across the county enabling patients to access care closer to home.

A scheme which is helping to improve the care of people in nursing homes in Kendal was also praised.

Dr Paul Atkinson said: “Kendal’s Care Home Project has demonstrated joint working of the town’s 3 GP practices, to deliver real improvement to care home patients. Over the past 2 years our dedicated team has been passionate about improving quality of life and listened intently to what is important to patients. We were honoured to be finalists at the General Practice Awards Ceremony.’

Windermere and Bowness Medical Practice was nominated for its Musculoskeletal Practitioner service which it introduced 18 months ago. It has attracted national interest as a potential model for MSK services – treating joints, bones and the tissue around them.

Dr Chris Stokes represented the practice which is also playing a role in the development of future MSK services in south Cumbria.

The General Practice Awards were held last week in London.
