The Tour of Britain cycling event will be making its way through Cumbria on Thursday 6 and Friday 7 September, which will mean disruption on the roads as full and rolling road closures are put in place and the roads are expected to be much busier due to the influx of spectators.

On Friday 7 September stage six of the race will begin in Barrow at 11:00am and will end at Whinlatter Pass at approximately 3:30pm.
With the start of the race being in Barrow Town Centre, there will be full road closures from 6 September with rolling road closures also occurring outside the town centre along the route.

Access to all NHS services on the route will be maintained at all times although some diversions may be in place.
Some car parks will be affected so please check before you travel.

Road closures and parking

The start time on Thursday 6 September is approximately 1.00pm and it should be completed by 2.30pm.  There will be a full road closure in place in Cockermouth town centre from 6.00pm on Wednesday 5 September to 5.00pm on Thursday 6 September to accommodate the installation of the infrastructure.  There will also be road closures in Cockermouth and surrounding areas from 10.00am to 2.45pm on Thursday 6 September.

The start time on Thursday 7 September is approximately 11.00am and it should be finished by 3.30pm.  There will be full road closures on Whinlatter Pass from 5.00am to 7.00pm on Friday 7 September.  There will be rolling road closures outside of the town centre along the route between 10.00am and 3.00pm on Friday 7 September.

The maximum delay is anticipated to be around 40 minutes, particularly in the initial stages of the race when all the riders are together.
There are procedures in place to create separate rolling closures for riders lagging behind so as to ensure that there aren’t major delays along the route.

Access to and parking at GP practices, dental practices and pharmacies on the route may be affected.

It is advisable to allow extra time for your journey and to check parking arrangements before travelling.
