‘Future GP & Nurse’ is a clinical careers programme hosted by Cumbria Health on Call (CHoC), which aims to give Year 12 students considering a career in medicine the chance to gain valuable experience in the field prior to completing their university applications. This is the 3rd year of the highly successful programme, which has seen multiple students go on to study medicine at university.
The programme is made up of two parts, the first is an open day designed to give students the chance to find out more about CHoC, the university application process, hear from current GPs and Nurses as well as participate in live workshops. This year’s event will include guest speakers from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lancaster, Northumbria, Sunderland and Manchester Universities, UCLAN and Cumbria Volunteer Service.
Previously the programme has been hosted in person but due to current COVID guidelines both sessions will be hosted virtually.
Juliet Eyre, Head of Workforce and OD said:
“Hosting our Future GP & Nurse event will be a first for us, but it has meant that we have been able to take more students than normally possible with nearly 70 students from across Cumbria registered to join. We look forward to welcoming all the students and once again seeing their passion for a future in medicine”.
Part one of the programme will take place on Wednesday 28th April 2021 with students expected to log on from 18 different colleges/sixth forms from Cumbria, all with a shared passion of working in medicine.
Dr Stacey Fisher, a CHoC GP, is the lead in organising the programme, she feels that it was vital that students are offered the opportunity to get experience prior to embarking on a career in medicine and didn’t want this to stop because of COVID restrictions. She has worked hard to offer something different this year that will still give the students the information and insight they need.
Susan Blakemore, CHoC’s Chief Executive who will be welcoming and addressing the students on the day said
“‘CHoC are delighted to once again host this important event for those students pursuing a career in Medicine and Nursing. We aim to assist and help in their journeys by giving an opportunity to come together for key preparation and discussion sessions aimed at those career pathways”
CHoC is hoping to see many of the faces again in a few years’ time after they qualify and take up some of the fantastic opportunities for clinicians in Cumbria.
